  3. Welcome to disc 1 of the August, 1995 edition of the Walnut Creek CICA
  4. for MS Windows CDROM!
  5.  
  6. This disc set contains 1300 MB of Microsoft Windows programs.  It includes
  7. hundreds of utilities, games, fonts, bitmaps, and more, all written
  8. especially for Windows.  The disc is based on the CICA Windows collection
  9. from Indiana University.  Most of the files on the disc are in zip format.
  10. This disc was produced in August 1995.

  14. Here is a list of some important files and directories:

  16. 00_index.txt     An index of subject directories 
  17.  
  18. 00global.txt     A list of all files with descriptions - English
  19.  
  20. setup.exe        Windows SETUP program
  21. viewj.exe        Japanese Windows viewer (requires Japanese Windows)
  22. view.exe         DOS file viewer for the index files (See DOCS\VIEW.DOC)
  23.                  (You have to use this to see the multi-lingual descriptions)
  24. filename.txt     List of all of the files on the CDROM
  25.  
  26. docs\            Documentation Files
  27. utils\           Utilities for unzipping files.
  28. vbrun\           VBRUN100.DLL, VBRUN200.DLL, VBRUN300.DLL
  29. _bbs\            Index files and programs for bbs use.

  33. To use this disc, you will need to unarchive the compressed programs on the
  34. CDROM to your hard disk.  
  35.  
  36. To make browsing the disk easier, we have included the WINVIEW program for
  37. Windows and VIEW for MSDOS in the root directory of the CDROM.  This program
  38. allows you to page through the index files and then unarchive the program(s)
  39. you want onto your hard disk.

  43. INSTALLATION:
  44.  
  45. Although the WINVIEW and VIEW programs require no installation (as they can
  46. run directly off of the disc), you can install the programs onto your hard
  47. drive using the SETUP program.  To run the installation:
  48.  
  49.         1)      Start up Windows
  50.  
  51.         2)      Choose RUN from the Program Manager File menu to see the RUN
  52.                 dialog box.
  53.         
  54.         3)      In the command line box, type
  55.  
  56.                         D:\setup
  57.  
  58.                 (If the D: drive is not your CDROM drive, change it to the
  59.                 appropriate CDROM drive letter.)

  61.         4) Click OK to start the installation.

  65. To install a program you uncompressed onto your hard drive from the CDROM so
  66. it displays an icon in your applications group, you can do one of two things: 
  67.  
  68. 1)  First select Windows Setup in the Main Group. 
  69.     Then select Options in the menu bar.  
  70.     Select Set Up Applications.
  71.     Select Ask You to Specify An Application.
  72.     Type the path and name of the program you'd like to install.
  73.  
  74.     Windows setup will copy the program's icon into the Application
  75.     Group and set up the program to run from the icon.
  76.  
  77.     For example, to make an permanent icon for boxworld after copying
  78.     it with VIEW you would type:
  79.  
  80.         c:\win3\games\boxworld\boxworld.exe
  81.  
  82.     into the "Specify An Application" box.
  83.  
  84. 2)  Start up File Manager, then locate the executable program (which
  85.     usually ends in .EXE or .COM) you wish to install.
  86.  
  87.     Drag that program icon to your Applications program group inside your
  88.     Program Manager window, then release the mouse button.  The icon will
  89.     now be in your Applications window, and the program can now be run from
  90.     that icon.

  94. Some applications require vbrun100.dll, vbrun200.dll, or vbrun300.dll.  These
  95. files are provided in the the VBRUN\ directory of the CDROM.
